Rings
Most C. Disston rings are offered in US sizes 4 to 10, including half sizes, and can be made in other sizes on request.
Measure a ring you already own. Choose a ring that fits the finger you plan to wear the new one on. Measure the inside diameter, edge to edge, in millimeters, and find the closest match in the chart below.
Measure your finger.
- Wrap a thin strip of paper or string snugly around the base of your finger.
- Mark where it overlaps, then measure the length in millimeters. That's the circumference.
- Find the closest match in the chart. If you fall between two sizes, choose the larger one.
| US size | Inside diameter | Circumference |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 14.9 mm | 46.8 mm |
| 4.5 | 15.3 mm | 48.0 mm |
| 5 | 15.7 mm | 49.3 mm |
| 5.5 | 16.1 mm | 50.6 mm |
| 6 | 16.5 mm | 51.9 mm |
| 6.5 | 16.9 mm | 53.1 mm |
| 7 | 17.3 mm | 54.4 mm |
| 7.5 | 17.7 mm | 55.7 mm |
| 8 | 18.1 mm | 57.0 mm |
| 8.5 | 18.5 mm | 58.3 mm |
| 9 | 18.9 mm | 59.5 mm |
| 9.5 | 19.4 mm | 60.8 mm |
| 10 | 19.8 mm | 62.1 mm |
| 10.5 | 20.2 mm | 63.4 mm |
Tips for an accurate fit
- Measure at the end of the day, when your fingers are warm. Fingers are smaller in the morning and in cold weather.
- Make sure the ring will slide over your knuckle.
- Wide bands fit more snugly, so consider going up a quarter to half size.
- Measure two or three times for accuracy.
Bracelets
- Wrap a flexible tape measure, or a strip of paper, snugly around your wrist just above the wrist bone.
- Note the measurement. That's your wrist size.
- Add about half an inch (1.5 cm) for a close fit, or about an inch (2.5 cm) for a looser, more relaxed drape.
| Wrist size | Suggested bracelet length (comfortable fit) |
|---|---|
| 5.5 in (14 cm) | 6 in (15 cm) |
| 6 in (15 cm) | 6.5 in (16.5 cm) |
| 6.5 in (16.5 cm) | 7 in (18 cm) |
| 7 in (18 cm) | 7.5 in (19 cm) |
| 7.5 in (19 cm) | 8 in (20 cm) |
Estate bracelets are one of a kind, but their length can often be adjusted. If a piece's length isn't on its listing, or you'd like it shortened or lengthened, ask me.
Necklaces
Where a necklace falls depends on the size of your neck, so start there.
- Wrap a flexible tape measure or a piece of string around the base of your neck, where a shirt collar would sit, snug but not tight.
- Add at least 2 inches (5 cm). That's the shortest length that will sit comfortably; anything shorter will feel tight.
- Use the chart below as a starting point. It shows where each length typically falls on an average neck of about 13 to 14 inches (33 to 36 cm). On a larger neck, every length sits a little higher; on a slimmer neck, a little lower.
| Length | On an average neck | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 15 in (38 cm) | Close around the neck, like a choker | Slimmer necks and high necklines |
| 16 in (41 cm) | Base of the neck | Delicate and close, lovely for small pendants |
| 18 in (46 cm) | Collarbone | The most versatile length for pendants |
| 20 in (51 cm) | Just below the collarbone | Pairs well with open necklines |
| 22–24 in (56–61 cm) | Upper chest | Works for layering and larger pendants |
The easiest way to check is to lay a string of the length you're considering around your neck and look in the mirror. Estate necklaces and chains are one of a kind, but their length can often be adjusted. If a piece's length isn't on its listing, or you'd like it shortened or lengthened, ask me.
Earrings
Earrings don't need sizing. If you'd like to know how large a piece is or how it will sit, get in touch and I'm happy to help.
Resizing and adjustments
C. Disston one-of-a-kind rings and estate rings over $1,500 can be resized up to two sizes up or down, complimentary. For made-to-order and bespoke pieces, the first resizing is complimentary on any order over $1,000. The size or length of most other estate pieces can often be adjusted too; ask about the piece you have in mind. Questions? Get in touch or book an appointment to be sized in person in the Bay Area.
